The understanding of the concept of meme has proven increasingly relevant for grasping the dynamics of digital communication. Based on a linguistic analysis grounded in frames (Fillmore; Baker, 2010) and in Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff; Johnson, 1980), an analysis was carried out of 13 definitions of meme proposed by three communication scholars in the field (Dawkins, 1976; Jenkins, 2009a; Chagas, 2021), with the aim of understanding how meme has been conceptualized by specialists on the subject. The first author appears here for having coined the term “meme”. Jenkins (2009) is included for being a well-known interlocutor of Dawkins (1976). And the Brazilian researcher Chagas (2021) for having produced a detailed literature review on the topic. The findings point to a framing of meme that tends to view it as a biological, market-oriented, and multifaceted object, whose discursive manipulation requires literacies and greater awareness.
