Our interviewee is Professor Márcia Machado Vieira, Professor of Linguistics at UFRJ, a sociolinguist on the move, with heart and soul, since her Scientific Initiation in the UFRJ undergraduate course. From the heart, because she values linguistic diversity, having been moved by her! From the soul, because, even in spaces where, some swear, there is no linguistic variation, she perceives variation. Márcia Machado Vieira challenges the reader, throughout this interview, to understand which spaces she refers to. With all her enthusiasm, she states that “movement is a personal trait! Scientific transversality is a trait that I notice in my direction in science and in the fact that, for some, I am not so easily categorized.” Malleability and dynamicity are keywords in Sociolinguistics and in its scientific work.
