This essay analyzes the testimony of the Colonial War in the novel Autópsia de um mar de ruínas, by João de Melo. Published in 1984, ten years after the political opening and the end of the portuguese colonial empire, the narrative seeks to build a memory about the war, inscribing in contemporary portuguese consciousness and identity, through art, one of the most traumatic chapters in the history of nation.
