Abstract

This essay tries to demonstrate that the tropicalist “project” did not represent a rupture with the developmentalism that was inaugurated in the Vargas period. Instead of a rupture, Tropicalismo represented the same strategy, albeit through a different tactic. At the same time, the inflection point that is said to have established the tropicalist “project”, that is, the event in which Caetano Veloso finds himself facing the film Terra em Transe by Glauber Rocha (1967) is reinterpreted. This essay is based on a dialogue between elements of the theories of the different Theodor Adorno and Walter Benjamin. The conclusion is that Tropicalismo was established within the discussion of modernization, nationalism, culture and Brazilian popular music as a dynamic, in the sense of a bolide, that is, as a Tropicalist Projectile.

Edson Pereira Silva, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF)

É Doutor em Genética pela University of Wales-Swansea (1998). Atualmente é professor asso- ciado da Universidade Federal Fluminense, onde atua nos temas: genética de populações de organismos marinhos, teoria evolutiva, epistemologia e ensino. Além disso, participa do grupo de pesquisa Interferências Literatura & Ciência (Letras UFF). Publicou, dentre outros trabalhos, o livro de poemas Maremoto, em 2018, pela Editora Texto Território.

Roberto José Bozzetti Navarro, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ)

É Doutor em Literatura Comparada (2006) pela UFF. Professor Associado do Departamento de Letras e Comunicação da UFRRJ, participa do Grupo de Pesquisa Literaturas, Linguagens e Contextos. É autor de três livros de poesia, A tal chama o tal fogo (2008, Oficina Raquel), Firma irreconhecível (2009, idem) e Despreparação para a morte (Texto Território 2017). É também autor fixo da Mallarmargens – Revista Online de Poesia e Arte Contemporânea.
