Abstract

The adaptation of a literary work to cinema or to television always implies something which remains immutable, turning the limits of what is an acceptable diversion or a radical subversion in a double experience to the eyes of the audiences. Concerning Os Maias, by Eça de Queirós, and the adaptation by Maria Adelaide Amaral, the balance between the respect for the novel and the televisual features leads to a complex subject: the adaptation as passage and as border, as debt and as creation. The aim of this work is to enlighten this particular matter by exploring the connection between the construction of character and the principles of adaptation. Therefore, Afonso da Maia e Maria Eduarda are in the ideal position to represent what can be considered the perfective but never perfect labors of adaptation.

Joana Duarte Bernardes, Centro de Literatura Portuguesa / Universidade de Coimbra

Membro do Centro de Literatura Portuguesa (CLP) da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (onde colabora no projecto «Figuras da Ficção»). Integra o grupo de trabalho da Edição Crítica das Obras de Eça de Queirós , assim como faz parte da equipe da colecção Cânone . Foi bolsista da Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) e da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, além de bolsista de mérito da Universidade de Coimbra. Distinguida com os prémios «Feijó» (2003), «de Excelência Feijó» (2004), da «Fundação Engenheiro António José de Almeida» (2005) e «Jornadas do Mar» (2006), pela Escola Na-val/Marinha, tem colaborado na revista «Queirosiana. Estudos sobre Eça de Queirós e a sua geração» e na «Revista de História das Ideias».
