Abstract

In denouncing and foreseeing, in fiction, the focus on racism – one of the worst facets of the slave ideology – Machado de Assis calls attention to the danger of erasing African descendancy in Brazil, in view of the fact that African descendancy was threathened to be aborted at source.

Professora Associada da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG, Mestre em Estu­dos Literários (1994) e Doutora em Literatura Comparada (2000), ambos pela UFMG, com estágio de Pós-Doutorado em Literatura Brasileira na USP (2003­2004). Organizou vários livros e publicou, dentre outros, o ensaio Guimarães Rosa -Fronteiras, margens, passagens (São Paulo: Senac/Ateliê, 2004).
