Matrix clauses in Portuguese grammars: brief historical overview

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is a historical view of the main clause. First, grammatical books before the NGB (Brazilian Gramatical Terminology) were analised. Then, the approaches under the NGB were studied and, finally, recent studies were investigated. Throughout this article, different approaches – syntatic, semantic and discoursive – were also taken into consideration. From this investigation, it was possible to identify some incoherences in the treatment of the main clause.

Doutora em Língua Portuguesa pela UERJ. Professora do Instituto de Letras da Universidade Federal Fluminense e da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), leciona nos cursos de graduação e de pós-graduação. Coordena, na UERJ, o projeto Língua Portuguesa e Redação para a Comunidade, e suas pesquisas têm como foco principal os temas de sintaxe, linguística sistêmicofuncional, produção textual, ensino-aprendizagem. É autora de “O ponto de vista no texto acadêmico” (2009), entre outros trabalhos.
