Abstract

This paper studies the use of formal vocabulary as a stylistic feature in João Ubaldo Ribeiro’s novel O feitiço da ilha do pavão (1997). It focuses on nouns, adjectives and verbs used in the construction of the characters’ and the narrator’s several voices, specially seeking to stress terms which may represent traditions of the language through the repertoire selected by the author.

Denise Salim Santos, UERJ / FACHA

Doutora (UERJ/2008), mestre em Língua Portuguesa (UERJ/2000) e especialista em educação na área de avaliação de desempenho. Trabalhou no Instituto de Educação do Rio de Janeiro como professora de Língua Portuguesa e exerceu a função de Diretor de Escola da Rede Municipal de Ensino do Rio de Janeiro. Atualmente é professora de Língua Portuguesa nas Faculdades Integradas Hélio Alonso (FACHA), integra o GT de Lexicologia, Lexicografia e Terminologia da ANPOLL.
