When a verb is the antonym of itself: cognition and lexical structure of “levantar”
Keywords:
lexical meaning, prototype, spacial cognition, metaphor, antonymy.Abstract
This paper analyzes the semantic structure of “levantar”, one of the Portuguese verbs of vertical movement. We shall demonstrate some differences between the prototypical structures of “levantar” and its synonym “erguer” and also the implications that these differences generate in the metaphorical meanings of the verbs. It shows the advantages of a cognitive approach to lexical analysis and finally, based on the theoretical methodology and analysis presented, it advances a descriptive schema for a lexical entry of the Portuguese verb “levantar”.
