Abstract

Schiller describes the artistic creation as a fight between three natures: the nature of the object to be represented, the nature of the material to be used in this representation, and the very nature of the artist. As stated by him, the nature of the artist should promote the harmony between those natures according to certain standards. If the nature of the material prevails over the others, the result is rude. If the nature of the artist is predominating, then the work of art becomes mannered. The style is the creation of ideals. That means that the pure objectivity of the representation should be admitted as the highest principle of art. The artistic creation is therefore like a fight in which the simple nature of the material and the subjective nature of the artist should disappear to open space for the individuality of the object to be represented.
