Abstract

The chronicles of Machado de Assis can be read as a historical document or a literary work. Characterized as a hybrid genre, the chronicle allows several readings and interpretations, but it’s always connected at the time and at the production’s context. The aim of this article is to averiguate how Machado de Assis commented the importants subjects of his time, mixing the french classic theater and the brazilian’s history.

Daniela Callipo, UNESP

Professora adjunta de Língua e Literatura Francesa do Departamento de Letras Modernas da Faculdade de Ciências e Letras da Universidade Estadual Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP- Campus de Assis). É Doutora em Língua e Literatura Francesa pela Universidade de São Paulo. Publicou, recentemente, o livro Rimas de Ouro e Sândalo: presença de Victor Hugo nas crônicas de Machado de Assis, os artigos “A intertextualidade em “Miss Dollar” de Machado de Assis, “Do nobre ao patético: o herói de Victor Hugo e o anti-herói de Machado de Assis” e “As invenções de Lélio: o pastiche nas “Balas de Estalo” de Machado de Assis”.
