THE 'CONTRAINTE' AS A RHETORIC GAME IN THE FRENCH GROUP OULIPO

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison between formal assumptions from classical rhetoric and the literary production of the French group Oulipo, in the 60s. As arguments to support such an approach, we highlight the clear affiliation of Oulipo authors to the rhétoriqueurs, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the use of contraintes as aesthetic procedures; and the role of rules, inherent in rhetoric, when transposed to the formal oulipian games. To do so, oulipian poems are herein analyzed in their immanent dimension, as products of verbal games that transform rhetoric into a grammar of the sentence and the text, from which the aesthetic phenomenon can emerge.

Docente do Departamento de Letras/Instituto de Linguagens da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT), é Professor credenciado no Mestrado em Estudos da Linguagem na mesma universidade. Suas pesquisas giram em torno dos seguintes temas: Semiologia, Teoria Literária, Crítica Imanente, Literatura e Novas Tecnologias, Literatura e Psicanálise.
