Abstract

This essay examines the relationship between lyrical poetry and society, with a historical point of view, highlighting the radical shift these relationships undertook in Modernity. In this context, Mallarmé’s poetry is taken as representative of the social role attributed to the lyric in modern times.

Doutor pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, é professor adjunto da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Presentemente, dedica-se ao estudo das origens da tradição poética ocidental. Entre seus trabalhos publicados contamse “Oswald de Andrade: um redescobridor do Brasil” e “No enveredamento das sertanias”.
