Dominação e Denominação: o Etnônimo Pejorativo "Mawia" e os Macondes de Moçambique no Tanganyika Colonial

Resumo

O artigo aborda o surgimento e a aplicação, a partir da segunda metade do século XIX, de um termo pejorativo utilizado para designar comunidades macondes localizadas ou provenientes de Moçambique no Tanganyika, atual Tanzânia continental. O escopo temporal abrange o emprego do termo por diferentes observadores europeus para indicar como o termo “mawia”, cuja origem antecede o período colonial, foi alçado à categoria de etnônimo e utilizado pelas autoridades alemãs e britânicas do Tanganyika. Para tanto, dá-se enfoque sobre um conjunto heterogêneo de fontes coloniais para rastrear o emprego dessa denominação com o objetivo de evidenciar os impactos negativos do colonialismo na naturalização de identidades socioculturais, e indicar a resistência de macondes de Moçambique radicados na colônia vizinha à denominação “mawia”.
