The text constitutes the first reflections of an ongoing research project - The line that leads also separates. Railway and socio-spatial segregation in medium-sized cities in Brazil and Spain -, so it first addresses the concepts of physical barrier, social barrier and urban border, then exposes the problem of level crossings, continues with the item of the landscapes of working-class neighborhoods and the social profile on the other side of the railway line, to conclude with some operational analytical bases and final considerations.
