AGING AND RESISTANCE IN FAVELAS:

narratives of older adults in Jacarezinho and Morro da Providência, Rio de Janeiro – Brazil

Abstract

This study explores elderly residents’ perceptions of aging in two favelas (informal settlements) in Rio de Janeiro - Morro da Providência, located in the central region, and Jacarezinho, in the city’s North Zone - based on their memories and narratives. Using a qualitative approach, the research relied on observations, field diaries, and semi-structured interviews addressing life trajectories, aging, and their relationship with the favela. Participants were selected through non-probabilistic snowball sampling until data saturation was achieved. The interviewees’ accounts reveal significant historical transformations in these areas and a deep affective and symbolic connection to the favela, highlighting the role of the elderly in preserving collective memory. Findings indicate that aging in these territories is shaped by distinct physical and social conditions, with accessibility and mobility emerging as critical factors for autonomy. Urban obstacles—such as steep staircases, uneven streets, narrow alleyways, and limited transportation—hinder mobility, restricting access to essential services and community participation. The study underscores the need for public policies that promote accessibility and inclusion, ensuring dignified and healthy aging for residents. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of recognizing favelas as spaces of memory, belonging, and resistance, where the elderly play a vital role in sustaining local history and community identity.
