As a relevant example of critical physical geography, the serious river problems generated by capitalism, which has led rivers to high and widespread levels of deterioration and a current emergency situation marked by the narrowing and incision of the channels, are addressed. In this context, dams and reservoirs constitute the ultimate example of river destruction. Despite the difficulties of overcoming traditional inertia and false myths, work is being done, from a critical and activist geography, on a paradigm shift along two major interrelated lines: on the replacement of the current system of fighting against floods, which is harmful and obsolete, by new management initiatives based on nature, and on hydromorphological restoration as a tool and trajectory to recover rivers from the impacts suffered in the Anthropocene. These two great challenges can only be achieved and extended with social and political support, so geography and environmental education will continue to be fundamental in achieving resilient river territories with river health for people health.
