The research highlights the importance of analyzes on the management and management of urban solid waste – MSW – in universities. The objective of the study is to present the existing correlations between the University of São Paulo–USP, campus at the São Paulo municipality, and the Red Latino- americana de Recicladores–RED LACRE for mitigating greenhouse gases regarding the issue of climate change in the dimension of MSW generation. The methodology used is exploratory bibliographic research. The results reveal: i.) the importance of selective waste collection for establishing relationships between universities and collectors of recyclable materials; ii.) the practice of research, teaching and extension for the topic; iii.) strengthening public policies and social movements with the participation of the university.
