The Working Group on Territory, Conflicts, and Urban Social Activisms at the National Symposium of Urban Geography (SIMPURB) builds its analysis on conflicts and social activism as a means to critically engage with the concept of territory and geographical space. In the 2024 edition, we observed a significant presence within the Working Group of papers focused on conflicts and/or activism, where debates surrounding the environment, gender, culture, and education have gained prominence. Indeed, the intersection of culture, conflict, and social activism is not a novel one. However, in this context, we approach culture as a constitutive dimension of conflict, from which it becomes possible to identify the contradictions and social negotiations that shape the production of space. Alongside other elements, culture and conflict emerge as key aspects in the analysis of spatiality. Adopting this broad understanding of culture, we have selected papers submitted and discussed within the Working Group at the latest SIMPURB edition to constitute this special session, which suggest new avenues for reading and analysing spatiality through the intersection of culture, conflicts, and social activism in their various manifestations. Through this partnership with Revista Espaço e Cultura, we therefore aim to contribute to the efforts of pluralising and complexifying the critical analysis of the urban and cities, as well as recognising the role of conflict as an interpretive key to understanding the cultural dimension of spatiality.
