Abstract

The article looks into the deindustrialization process of the Rio de Janeiro (RJ) state, in Brazil, between 2002 and 2021. It’s a historical-comparative sociology based on the real growth rates of RJ’s and Brazil’s industry segments. It tests the hypothesis that RJ is undergoing a faster deindustrialization process than the other Brazilian states. The main source of data are the regional accounts, made available by Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and local government agencies. Real growth rates of the added value to GDP are used as proxies of industrialization and deindustrialization. The author’s conclusion corroborates the hypothesis. It also proposes a periodization of RJ’s deindustrialization.
