Journal History

In 1982, Medicina HC-UERJ "was born", citing the words of the Chief Editor Prof. Ismar C. da Silveira, with support from the administration of the Hospital de Clínicas and the incentive of the Administrative Department. At that time, the Permanent Scientific Committee (COCIPE) of HC-UERJ had the opportunity to elaborate an operational outline in order to develop its quarterly medical journal, a project supported by UERJ Rectory in the person of Rector João Salim Miguel who, by the way, happened to sign the presentation of the first volume.

The purpose of the journal was to create a vehicle for the dissemination of experience, research, and didactic guidelines of all biomedical area professionals of the institution. The journal survived for nine years publishing its editions in a quarterly basis. In 1984, Medicina HC-UERJ became Medicina HUPE-UERJ, and publications decreased after 1991. In the following five years, it was edited with the purpose of serving as The Hospital Congress Proceedings.

There are no records of the reasons that led to the editorial interruption; however, it is not difficult to imagine the obstacles within the context of our public institutions that need to be overcome in order to maintain the publication as initially proposed.

The Medicina HUPE-UERJ Journal, entitled afterwards as the Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto Journal , is back to edition, part of its duty and commitment with the community.

We look forward and expect the essential collaboration of those who continue producing knowledge in our hospital. As a matter of fact, the difficulties remain as challenges that the academic community will, definitely, overcome.

The Hospital Universitário Pedro Ernesto Journal honors, in his first issue, Prof. Ismar Chaves da Silveira for all he delivered as Chief Editor of Medicina HUPE-UERJ.

In 2019, following the actions taken to broaden our scope, the Editorial Board decided to review the name of the HUPE Journal. The name chosen was Brazilian Journal of Health and Biomedical Sciences (BJHBS).

Thus, articles will be published in different formats on several subjects related to health and biomedical sciences.

We continue raising the quality of our processes and expanding our network of international scientific cooperation.
