Neste artigo, analisaremos a sérietelevisiva Penny Dreadful, produzida pelo canalnorte-americano Showtime e ntre 2 014 e 2 015.Nossa leitura demonstrará como o roteirista JohnLogan revisita monstros clássicos da literaturavitoriana para propor relevantes discussões sociais.Para tanto, escolhemos dois eixos interpretativos,centrados em pares de personagens e suasinterações, abordando os temas da identidadee alteridade e as dúbias definições de gênero eafetividade, recorrendo a autores como DavidRoas, Julio Jeha e José Gil e ao livro de SharonGosling, que apresenta entrevistas com o elencoe criadores.

This paper aims to analyze the televisionseries Penny Dreadful, produced by the North-American broadcast company Showtime between2014 and 2015. Our reading will discuss howscreenwriter John Logan revisits traditionalmonsters from Victorian literature in order topresent relevant social topics. Thus we chose twointerpretive lines, based on two pairs of charactersand their interactions, discussing themes such asidentity and alterity, and the dubious definitionsof gender and affection. We employed works byauthors such as David Roas, Julio Jeha and José Gil,and Sharon Gosling’s book, featuring interviewswith the cast and creators of the show.
