Abstract
Abstratct: This article proposes a look at the literary production of the Maranhão author Viriato Correia, based on a reading of the short story "Madrugada negra", which is part of his work Novelas doidas (Crazy Novels, 1921), from the perspective of fantastic literature and its most recent conceptions. We present an excerpt from the conclusion of the course, produced from the research carried out in the Scientific Initiation Project – PIBIC/UEMA-22/23 – about the manifestation of the unusual in the author's work. Its aims analyze the manifestation of the unusual in the narrative of the short story "Madrugada negra", from the novel Novelas doidas, by Viriato Correia from Maranhão. We investigated the categories of character and space as fundamental elements for the production of meanings by the reader in the configuration of the moral monster. The study is characterized as bibliographical, with qualitative analysis procedures in the light of fantastic literature, with an emphasis on the fictional unusual, based on theorists and researchers such as: Todorov (1981), García (2007), Roas (2014), Gama-Khalil (2012) and França (2012), among others. The analysis made us understand that the unusual manifests itself in the work, based on the construction of the space and the actions narrated by the protagonist, which lead the reader to a reflection on the boundaries between reality and the breakdown of the rational principles that govern society and the relationships that man entangle in with his fellow man so as not to be socially unmasked.
