Abstract
This study investigates the influence of Gothic aesthetics on two Brazilian horror films from the
1970s: As filhas do fogo (Walter Hugo Khouri, 1978) and Enigma para demônios (Carlos Hugo
Christensen, 1975). It aims to analyze how this European-origin aesthetic is reinterpreted within
the Brazilian context, where the colonial and slave-holding past serves as a spectral presence
haunting contemporary society. Through their deployment of Gothic elements, these films engage
with pressing social issues reflective of the era in which they were produced, suggesting a dialogue
between aesthetic form and socio-historical critique
