Abstract

This work interprets the gothic genre as an influential aesthetic throughout the history of recent art, focusing our attention on the formation of a Brazilian gothic cinema. Addressing the problem of how to interpret the manifestation of Gothic in other countries, we start from the hypothesis of this aesthetic as a malleable atmosphere, capable of adapting to new environments and being given new meaning. The methodology proposed here is the use of a literature review of the European origins of Gothic and how atmosphere works in the arts, enabling an aesthetic-narrative analysis of four Brazilian films made in the 70s. Preliminary results indicate Brazilian Gothic as a translation of a European aesthetic that displays an approach to historical social ills that the country has never overcome, allowing a reflection on popular narratives and historical anxieties.
