Abstract

The text discusses the short story "Under the Black Water", by Mariana Enriquez, based on the notion of a zone of sacrifice. Initially, it characterizes the peripheral zones of Latin America as a privileged spatiality for horror stories, and then addresses the metaphysical dynamics of sacrificial practice in its specific relationship with the Anthropocene. In this way, it is argued that Enriquez's tale is characterized as a critique that inverts traditional horror structures to produce a kind of terrestrial and peripheral theogony, in contradiction to the rationalizing and disenchanted perspective typical of modernity.
