Gay cure? Parliamentary debates on the (de)pathologization of homosexuality

Abstract

The article investigated parliamentary debates in Federal Chamber on the permissibility of psychologists to offer treatment of conversion to brazilian heterosexuality for homosexuals between 2009 and 2013. The methodology consisted of the analysis of the speeches of the deputies. Supporters of these therapies include evangelical parliamentarians, who conceive of homosexuality as perversion, and among those who opposed feminist parliamentarians and representatives of the LGBT movements (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transsexual and Transgender) who conceive of homosexuality as a manifestation of human sexual diversity. The prohibition of these treatments was maintained, ensuring the defense of human rights and the autonomy of the Federal Council of Psychology.

Doutora em Sociologia pelo Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Políticos da Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (IESP/UERJ), 2017 - Bolsista FAPERJ. Mestre em Sociologia pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG),2006, Bolsista CAPES. Bacharel em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 2003. Lecionou Sociologia, Teoria Política, Antropologia e Introdução às Ciências Sociais nos cursos de Direito, Comunicação Social, Turismo, Assistência Social e Ciências Contábeis, na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC/MG), além de Teoria Política e Cultura Brasileira nos cursos de Comunicação Social e Design na Universidade FUMEC (Fundação Mineira de Educação e Cultura). Pesquisadora do Netsal (Núcleo de estudos de teoria social e a América Latina). Trabalhou na Prefeitura Municipal de Belo Horizonte, na Secretaria de Desenvolvimento Social. Tem experiência na área de Sociologia Política, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Movimentos LGBTs, Congresso Nacional e Direitos Humanos.
