Abstract

The cemetery is a privileged space for the use of History, because it is a place of safeguarding of a memory clearly defined in monuments full of signals. The objective of this work is to relate the use of this particular urban space in the construction of the memory of personalities related to music and the carioca carnaval. We understand that the  living establish impressions about themselves and the dead, produce their own documents giving meaning and direction to life, represent their feelings, sensitivities, social and collective aspirations which are bound to human earthly or heavenly relations. In this case, the dead are people known and recognized for their artwork. Two pathways are established: the composition of graves with their symbols, meanings and messages; and the reception, (re) construction and perpetuation of the memory by the visitors to these graves. Epitaphs, signs, photographs and other markings that are present on the graves help us compose the type of memory that was meant to be perpetuated, and which is the intended relationship between the living (fan / visitor) and the dead (artist). For this work we chose the graves of consecrated carnaval personalities: Noel Rosa, Carmem Miranda, Francisco Alves, Ary Barroso, Clara Nunes, Elizeth Cardoso, Dona Neuma da Mangueira and Emilinha Borba. We expect to contribute to the understanding of a particular type of source for the history of Rio’s Carnaval.
