Asteraceae is one of the most globally representative botanical families and holds medicinal significance. This study aimed to analyze the presence of this family in official compendia and in regulated herbal medicines in Brazil. For this purpose, 11 national documents from Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) and the Ministry of Health, and six international documents related to medicinal plants were analyzed. The study sought to characterize the listed Asteraceae species according to family representativeness, origin, and therapeutic indication. A total of 44 species belonging to the family were identified in the examined documents, of which only 12 (27.7%) are native. The Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, 1st edition, showed the highest representation of Asteraceae, with 21 (47.7%) species. However, in the current edition of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, the 6th edition, only nine Asteraceae species are listed, with just four being native. The majority of the species have therapeutic indications for digestive system diseases. In 2022, 56 regulated herbal medicines derived from Asteraceae were found, with 20 coming from three native species, registered or notified at Anvisa. It is concluded that Asteraceae has significant representation in most of the documents analyzed, highlighting its medicinal importance in Brazil and worldwide. However, there is a predominance of exotic species in both national compendia and in industrialized herbal medicines regulated by Anvisa. This reflects little of the potential of Brazilian biodiversity and indicates the need for greater investment in research and innovation by the government, companies, and science and technology institutions. Thus, the establishment of norms and more standardized technical-scientific publications can contribute to better exploitation of the country's botanical potential.
