The Dilemma between Mona and APA: The Case of Lagoa do Peri

Abstract

This Technical Note (NT) represents an alternative proposal for re-categorizing the Lagoa do Peri Municipal Park, in the south of Santa Catarina Island, Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina. Furthermore, it should be noted that the designation of Natural Monument (MONA) was imposed without the opportunity for a discussion of alternative options, which may have significantly impacted the sentiment and overall perception of the communities involved. Similarly, it is imperative to consider that several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals were not considered during the Advisory Council discussions. This NT seeks to rescue much of the existing ignored information. It is mainly based on the natural capital and ecosystem services of the Lagoa do Peri System, which should always be part of any protected area management plan.
