Abstract

The main clauses, although they receive little descriptive investment in the grammatical tradition, assume, in addition to the relevance of their structural content, discursive marks that configure opinionated-argumentative resources in the constitution of textuality. In this work, two categories are revisited – the main clauses and the integral conjunctions –, both necessary not only for the organization of the compound period, but also essential for conveying textual marks of opinion. The work adopts as a theoretical model the recent discussions in linguistic functionalism about the organization of the constituents of the period composed of subordination. To endorse the relevance of the clause structure in question, an example of a reader's letter is analyzed, in which it is possible to map opinionated and, consequently, argumentative linguistic marks.
