Abstract

This article aims to analyze the conflict between the Roman empress consort, Aelia Eudoxia (395-404), an important figure in the consolidation of Christianity in the East, and John Chrysostom (397-403), bishop of the See of Constantinople. Through the works Ecclesiastical History by Socrates Scholasticus and Ecclesiastical History by Sozomen of Bethelia, we intend to understand how each author constructed a representation of Eudoxia in the narrative of the conflict, taking into account the authors' positions regarding the episcopate of John Chrysostom and Eudoxia's public action in a context of redefinition of women's social roles.
