O livro dedica-se a delinear um quadro analítico sobre a política externa dos países da América Latina à luz da tensão existente entre ideologia (valores e imperativos morais, os quais se sobrepõem a avaliações de viabilidade e consequências práticas) e pragmatismo (prioridade da aplicabilidade e usabilidade sobre considerações ideacionais). O livro é composto por treze capítulos, escritos por autores de diferentes nacionalidades, e privilegia um recorte temporal recente, de modo a jogar luz sobre os eventos contemporâneos da diplomacia regional.
ABSTRACT
This book sets forth a framework for analysing the foreign policy of countries in Latin America from the perspective of the tension between ideology (moral values and imperatives, which are superimposed against feasibility studies and practical consequences) and pragmatism (prioritising applicability and usability over ideological considerations). There are 13 chapters written by authors of different nationalities, and priority is given to recent developments, casting light on contemporary events in regional diplomacy.
