Semantic class-based hierarchical networks lie at the heart of Usage-based Construction Grammar. As a result, a methodological challenge emerges: how to identify semantic classes that define middle-level constructions in a constructional network? This paper aims at demonstrating a specific method designed to meet this challenge. In order to do so, the method is applied to Brazilian Portuguese clausal complementation constructions. The proposed method involves the mapping of lexically specific constructions in an Exemplar Theory fashion, the identification of emerging semantic class and the verification of the resulting network by means of Multidimensional Scaling.Downloads
