Abstract

The Vegetable, or From President to Postman and Scandalabra: A Farce Fantasy in a Prologue and Three Acts still inhabit the Fitzgerald canon as works of dubious quality due to the total disaster of their first productions— an opinion that reflects many a researcher’s tendency to analyze the two plays as pertaining to the tradition of dramatic realism. This view also ignores the expectations of the public at the time, the prevalent theatrical trends, and—perhaps more importantly—Literary Modernism, which mixed dramatic conventions and prose to create hybrid pieces called closet dramas. This paper analyzes the two aforementioned plays through the Modernist closet drama perspective. It aims to recognize the authors’ stage directions as a space for experimenting with prose, seeking parallels with plays that were written during the same time period and that also tried to subvert the use of stage directions.

Marcela Lanius, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Doutoranda em Estudos da Linguagem na PUC-Rio. É mestre em Estudos da Linguagem e bacharel em Letras com habilitação em Tradução pela mesma instituição. Durante a graduação, foi bolsista PIBIC e recebeu, por duas vezes consecutivas, a Menção Honrosa do Centro de Teologia e Ciências Humanas. Atua como tradutora e revisora. Sua tese propõe uma releitura crítica da obra literária de Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, bem como uma tradução comentada da única peça teatral escrita pela autora e inédita na língua portuguesa. É membro da F. Scott Fitzgerald Society, Assistente Editorial do periódico Tradução em Revista e foi coeditora do número 24 da Revista escrita (PUC-Rio), com o tema “Vozes femininas: narrativas e reescritas literárias e artísticas”.

Marcia A. P. Martins, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Doutora em Comunicação e Semiótica pela PUC-SP, tendo realizado estágio pós-doutoral na Queen Mary University of London em 2012. Tradutora e professora, atua nos cursos de formação de tradutores e no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos da Linguagem do Departamento de Letras da PUC-Rio. É coeditora do periódico Tradução em Revista e compilou a base de dados sobre traduções brasileiras do cânone dramático shakespeariano disponível em www.dbd.puc-rio.br/shakespeare, da qual é gestora. Entre as publicações recentes, coorganizou a antologia bilíngue Palavra de tradutor/ The Translator's Word (EdUFSC, 2018).
