Abstract

Reading of chapter 12, «An 1814 episode», from Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas. It is shown how the combination of two veiled sources — Stendhal, from Le rouge et le noir, and Manuel Antônio de Almeida, from Memórias de um sargento de Milícias — point out the ideological instability of the text. It wavers between the noble tone, which describes the reaction to Napoleon´s fall in the ex-colony´s capital, and the rascally tone, which has fun with Dona Eusébia´s fall in the backyard.

Silviano Santiago, UFF

Romancista, contista, poeta, crítico literário e professor, nasceu em Formiga (MG) e atualmente mora no Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Três vezes vencedor do Prêmio Jabuti, é autor de livros importantes como Em liberdade , considerado um dos dez melhores romances brasileiros dos últimos 30 anos, e Stella Manhattan , ambos temas constantes em teses de mestrado e doutorado nas universidades brasileiras, latino-americanas e norte-americanas. É também autor de Uma história de família , Viagem ao México , De cócoras , O falso mentiroso e Keith Jarrett no Blue Note . Entre os seus livros de ensaio, destacam-se Uma literatura nos trópicos , Nas malhas da letra e o recente O cosmopolitismo do pobre . Silviano é graduado em Letras Neolatinas pela Universidade Federal de Mi­nas Gerais, doutor pela Universidade de Paris – Sorbonne. Lecionou em Yale, Stanford, Texas, Indiana e Toronto. Vários dos seus livros encontram-se tra­duzidos.
