Causative-ergative alternation in Brazilian Portuguese
Keywords:
semantic properties, thematic roles, lexical-semantic conditions.Abstract
This paper is concerned with the conditions that govern variation in causative-ergative constructions in Brazilian Portuguese. Following research by Whitaker-Franchi (1989) and Levin & Rappaport-Hovav (1995), those conditions are reformulated based on the semantic properties of these constructions. We offer a detailed analysis of the thematic grid for variant causative verbs and a specification of the property of the element that functions as ‘trigger’ of the process, based on Cançado (2005).
