Abstract

Intellectual practices among enlightened Luso-Brazilian thinkers in the 18th century was thoroughly characterized by the principle of utility. The clear trend of pragmatism it brought about, in its turn, associated with the general adherence to progress and nation. In view of that, the intellectuals’ efforts were all turned to the strengthening of the State and, as a consequence, of the whole civil society, as advocated by Ribeiro Sanches. However, for that to be feasible it was necessary to reformulate the educational model to such an extent that the formation of individuals enlightened, professionalized, and willing to work hard for enlarging the monarchic wealth could be guaranteed. At the same time, the intellectual performance reached a relevant pedagogic dimension, once it was guided both by the dissemination of the enlightened ideals and the participation in the process of educational formation. Notwithstanding, scientists and intellectuals got confounded on account that, on the one hand, both were devoted to the implementation of the same political-pedagogic project, and, on the other hand, because they had to work in different discursive areas while venturing themselves into the recording of science and into poetry. Thus, Francisco de Melo Franco e Manuel da Silva Alvarenga are examples of authors who were simultaneously active in the literary and scientific studies. So, whether in satire or in encomiastic poetry, authors viewed as products of enlightenment always found space for a pragmatic participation in society.
