‘CIDADE LIVRE’: FOUNDATION AND CULTURAL MEMORY

The plot of João Almino’s novel, Cidade livre, is organized by two events: the building of Brasilia, the new Brazilian capital, and the vanishing of a worker, the character Valdivino. The connections between these episodes, one historical, the other ficcional, are examined, in order to understand the relations between a foundation myth, and the sacred and sacrificing conditon of a founder hero.
