DISSENSO RELIGIOSO NOS EUA: EXPERIÊNCIAS MISSIONÁRIAS E O CASO DE CATONSVILLE

Resumo

Este artigo lança luz sobre experiências do campo religioso que se pode associar à configuração de uma cultura política liberal e de esquerda nos EUA ao longo do século XX. Destaca-se a trajetória de uma ex-missionária da Ordem Maryknoll na Guatemala, Marjorie Melville, que integrou o grupo de religiosos conhecido como Catonsville 9, responsável pela queima de cartões de alistamento em evento que se tornaria ícone do movimento contra a guerra do Vietnã. Além da interface entre correntes seculares e religiosas, este caso permite verificar o peso das conexões transnacionais na composição da tradição de dissenso religioso nos EUA.

Cecilia da Silva Azevedo, Universidade Federal Fluminense

Professora Aposentada do Departamento de História da Universidade Federal Fluminense, atuando na Área de História das Américas entre 1992 e 2015. Professora do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da UFF, atuando no Setor de História Contemporânea, até abril de 2019. Mestrado em História Social da Cultura pela Universidade Federal Fluminense (1990) e Doutorado em História Social pela Universidade de São Paulo (1999). Integrante do NUPEHC - Núcleo de Pesquisas em História Cultural da UFF, da ANPHLAC - Associação Nacional de Pesquisadores em História das Américas -, e da Rede de Pesquisas em História dos EUA.
