This is a good idea, and you should only sign up for races after these long walks are pretty much completely filled with running, and little to no actual walking. With that out of the way, here is the reason why it's a good idea to sign up for a race or a competition as soon as you start running. A race is going to provide you with a very concrete, external goal to shoot for. It's great to have internal goals, it's great to have some personal goals that are just between you and the open road, but overall most people find a lot more success when they have some sort of external pressure and focus to really sharpen their practice. For starters, a race is going to provide you with this external goal. It's going to provide you with something that you look forward to that is set up by other people and that puts you in competition with other people. The most important competition is with other people, but it can really feel good to go do a race and not come in last. There's something about besting other people (in friendly competition) that can really enervate and motivate you, and it's a lot easier to turn on that extra boost of running power every once in a while when there is a competitor to pass. A competition also provides structure that will keep you running. It can be hard to run for a year straight without any kind of structured goals to hit that are recognized by other people. Even just competing in 4 races a year can be a big help. It's much easier to motivate yourself to get out and run when you are actually training for something, compared to just training somewhat aimlessly on your own. And the final reason to incorporate races into your running as soon as possible is the fact that they are fun! Not only is it fun to compete and to test yourself, it's fun to go and feel like you are part of a larger community who are all doing the same things that you are doing. And if running isn't fun, than there's a good chance that you aren't going to keep up with it!
