Generally, there are two types of macular degeneration Vision 20/20 Protocol Review or MD. Wet MD often results in a quick loss of vision and is the result of abnormal blood vessel growth in the retinal area. Dry MD will cause a slow loss of vision and is often caused by deposits building up in the retina. This will also cause the macular to become thin. In fact, many people do not even realize there is a problem because the loss of vision is so slow to develop.Dry MD and wet MD can be treated through a variety of different methods. With wet MD, laser surgery or photocoagulation is often very successful in removing some of the abnormal blood vessels from the area. There are also medications that can be used to help get rid of the problems associated with the blood vessels that are causing the problem. For dry MD, however, there is no actual cure, but the progression of the disease can be slowed down and prevented from advancing. Many of the treatment plans include taking high doses of vitamins. Vitamins A, C, and E, as well as zinc and copper have been successful with numerous patients. The result is that the disease progresses very slowly and the majority of people are able to continue living their lives as normal. As with any health condition, early detection can be critical for formulating a treatment plan. Anyone who suspects they have macular degeneration should contact their ophthalmologist immediately. The sooner the disease is diagnosed, the better chances for a successful treatment.
