Wetlands perform many environmental functions, which translate into their own typological variety. The wetlands classification systems are fundamental for wetlands protection and management, since they provide categorization, conceptual and terminological uniformity. A systematization of the main wetland classification systems currently in the international and national literature was done, as well as an evaluation of the importance of the use of hydrogeomorphological (HGM) parameters for the wetlands classification in the national context. It can be said that the use of HGM criteria can contribute to the improvement brazilian wetland classification, since they are essential to locate the wetland in the landscape, to understand their hydrological functioning and maintenance processes, their interactions with adjacent terrestrial and / or aquatic geomorphological systems and environmental functions.Downloads
