Resumo

The school can be considered as the first well-organized educational entity that a person comeinto contact from his early life. It assumes, in addition to education, an equally important part ofa child’s life that has to do with socialization. To achieve its purposes, teachers prepare apatterned, time-structured and methodical program, in the early stages of which is included theconquest of the language system, through the reading and writing process, what is well knownas literacy. Recent studies have argued that language proficiency is not inherently generated butmethodically and gradually achieved, and more precisely when a person has achieved whatscientists and educators define as, phonological awareness.

In this paper we will attempt a general description of the terms learning difficulties andphonological awareness, and focusing on a learning disability, dyslexia, we will examine howphonological awareness can influence the literacy process of dyslexic individuals.
