Bio Statement

West Ham United suffered a controversial late defeat by Sheffield United in Premier League Friday evening action.

The hosts largely controlled the match and, after a dull first half without a shot on target, took the lead when John Fleck seized on a mistake from substitute keeper David Martin and squared for Oliver McBurnie to convert.

The Hammers offered little threat until Declan Rice barged through midfield to set up Robert Snodgrass for the leveller, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a handball against Rice in the build-up.

Sportsmail's James Ayles will provide live coverage of Sheffield United vs West Ham including score, lineups and build-up.

DECLAN RICE SPEAKS

We are fuming really, the lads are livid. It was a tough place to come they have been excellent all season and credit to them to grind it out. We created some chances, missed some chances and that goal at the end is gutted.

I just watched it back there and he has knocked the ball into my hand, he has headed the ball into my hand, if you are running like that in the rules it is handball but I can't do anything about it.

I don't think anyone wants VAR in the game. they are celebrating VAR like it is a goal and it should not be like it. it is in the game now and we have to get on with it.

I can't get over it how he has knocked it into my hand and i haven't intentionally handballed it. That is football.

You are celebrating with the fans and buzzing. Now I'm gutted.

MATCH REPORT

Sheffield United 1-0 West Ham: VAR rules out last-gasp goal by Hammers

RICHARD GIBSON AT BRAMALL LANE: Sheffield United earned a well-deserved three points against West Ham on Friday night to move up to fifth in the Premier League.

21:55

FULL-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

A rather turgid game that burst into life right at the death.

Sheffield United largely dominated thtoughout, Oli McBurnie put them ahead through David Martin's mistake.

Yet, in added time, Declan Rice charged through midfield, laid it off to Robert Snodgrass for a dramatic leveller - then VAR intervened and judged the slightest handball to rule it out.

21:53

90+4mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Jamie Carragher is furious on Sky. A cruel way to be denied a dramatic point. That is the fault of the new handball rule though, rather than VAR. But still, awful.

21:51

VAR CHECK - NO GOAL: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

It has been ruled out! For handball!

The ball deflected off Declan Rice's hand and that is heartbreak for the Hammers.

The youngster did incredibly well but the ball took the slightest touch off his hand, barely perceptible on VAR and not noticeable in real time, and that has cost the visitors a point.

21:50

GOAL: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-1 WEST HAM (Snodgrass 90+2)

That is out of nowhere. West Ham do not deserve that in the slightest.

The bounce goes West Ham's way as Declan Rice just bursts through midfield, get the ball under control and on the edge of the box he slides in Robert Snodgrass to level!

But VAR is checking for a foul by Rice!

21:48

90mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Three added minutes to go.

Baldock hares down the right, just about keeps the ball in play but Martin deflects away at the near post.

West Ham are not getting near the ball at the moment.

21:47

88mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

West Ham have really been outclassed all over the pitch here.

Still, some anxious moments to navigate now.

Anderson is back on but can barely walk out there at the moment.

21:45

86mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Into the final five minutes.

A few of those will be spent attending to the stricken Felipe Anderson. He looks to have sustained a muscle injury collecting the ball.

The free-kick goes to the Hammerss, Snodgrass swings it in from deep but Haller bounces his header well over the bar.

21:43

Sheffield united look razor-sharp every time they get the ball and are absolutely ripping through the West Ham backline.

Sharp plays in Mousset but he is forced wide and the move breaks down.

21:41

83mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Both sides make that final change.

Lanzini withdrawn, Pablo Fornals given a chance to be a hero.

Goalscorer Oli McBurnie ambles his way off to be replaced by local legend Billy Sharp.

21:40

81mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Suddenly John Egan slips on a routine ball, Lanzini is in down the left and henderson has to be alert to deflect his effort away.

The corner is wasted and Henderson gathers it in.

21:39

78mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

West Ham are going absolutely nowhere in attack, they cannot string a thing together.

Sheffield are happy to hit Mousset and use his pace.

21:35

76mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Lanzini steps up and somehow Henderson scrambles across, sticks a palm out and keeps the low effort out.

In the blink of an eye Mousset is one-on-one with the defence but blazes the shot over.

21:33

75mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Rice gives the ball away on the right flank and immediately Sheffield United break forward. Mousset skins Ogbonna but has no support. He somehow just holds onto it until Norwood appears. Mousset gets the ball back but he overplays it and the move breaks down.

West ham have a free-kick 30 yards out with a few contenders over the ball.

21:32

73mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Sheffield United should be out of sight!

Some lovely play through midfield, Norwood feeding Fleck who fires it towards McBurnie, the striker leaves it and Mousset runs on but Martin stands tall to stick out a leg and keep the effort out!

Besic picks up the remnants on the right, cuts in field but curls a harmless one straight at Henderson.

21:29

70mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

The Blades respond by sending Mo Besic on in place of John Lundstram in the middle of the park.

Another free-kick for West Ham about 10 yards inside Sheffield United's half. This time Haller commits a foul to end this set-piece.

21:28

GOAL RULED OUT: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Snodgrass almost makes an immediate impact, his free-kick is curled right to Haller who pokes home but that is flagged, correctly, for offside by a good half a body.

No real controversy over that.

21:26

67mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

A change of shape for West Ham. Robert Snodgrass is on for Masuaku and a possible change of formation to go with that here.

21:22

63mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

Some beautiful play down the left from the hosts, Stevens finds Mousset who looks like he has overrun it, but plays it across the box for Lundstram.

The midfielder rolls it for Baldock but it is just too far ahead and the wing-back has his shot blocked away for a corner.

21:20

62mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

That goal hasn't exactly sparked this match into life just yet.

An awful lot happening in the middle of the pitch but not much at either end.

21:17

60mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM

David McGoldrick, the striker who is two shots off becoming the man to take most shots without scoring in Premier League history, is off to be replaced by Lys Mousset.

GOAL: SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM (McBurnie 53mins)

Awful mistake from David Martin!

He tries to pass the goal kick out to Balbuena but the pass is awry, it is seized upon by John Fleck, Balbuena is floundering and the ball is rolled to Oli McBurnie.

he actually gets a bit lucky as the shot goes through Martin and in, but he will not care and we have an opener.

21:11

50mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

it's taken a little while to get going this half, but suddenly the Blades slice through their opponent and win a corner. that is cleared but the cross back in is knocked over by McBurnie.

21:09

Away we go. Let's not get our hopes up, but we may see a shot on target this half.

20:51

33% - Three of the nine Premier League games this season to see no shots on target during the opening 45 minutes have involved Sheffield United (against West Ham (tonight), Aston Villa (December) and Man City (December)). Lively. #SHUWHU pic.twitter.com/aOYuysHOAF

20:49

HALF-TIME: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

The final minutes of the half pass without incident and then the whistle goes.

Not a huge amount to report from that, except an injury to poor Lukasz Fabianski in the West Ham goal.

See you in 15.

20:41

40mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Closing in on the half-time whistle now.

Lundstram heads wide from a corner.

Haller is being completely subdued by the three Blades centre-backs at the moment.

20:36

35mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Zabaleta, playing at wing-back, stretches his legs but the cross is straight into Henderson's arms.

20:35

32mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Anderson and Lanzini link up well, but they are massively let down by Masuaku who slices his from the left horribly wide.

Plenty of long balls from West ham trying to get in behind and make the backline turn.

Baldock's cross is slightly misjudged by McGoldrick, then Stevens swings it in form the other side.

20:30

28mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Suddenly there is a chink of light for West Ham.

The ball goes long, Felipe Anderson is chasing over the top but just mishits his right-footed shot past the post. A chance, though.

20:29

26mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Masuaku cannot jink his way through the backline, but some more cohesive play leads to a corner.

Lanzini's inswinger is headed away at the far post.

20:22

18mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

Enda Stevens is chopped down, John Fleck whips in the free kick from just on the left and the rebound falls to John Lundstram who is inches away from sending his shot into the net but for a Balbuena block.

Still the best of the play is coming from the hosts.

20:15

14mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

A terrible sight for West Ham as Fabianski is forced to depart. Eleven games missed already this season and the injury curse has struck again.

There will be relief that it is David Martin and not Roberto who is taking over between the sticks.

Haller then loses his footing in the box and lashes one wildly.

20:13

11mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

A win would send Sheffield United above fellow United Manchester into fifth, a scarcely believable acievement considering where Chris Wilder rescued them from.

Trouble on the horizon for West Ham as Lukasz Fabianski is down in the box and this does not look good.

As soon as he took that goal kick he could be seen gesticulating and limping before dropping to the deck. David martin is stripped and ready.

20:11

10mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

The Blades are enjoying the best of the opening stages.

McBurnie's ball is chased down the left by Stevens, whose slide wins a corner.

Norwood's delivery is met by a charging John Egan but the header is narrowly over the bar.

20:07

6mins: SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 WEST HAM

A rather low-key opening few minutes.

David McGoldrick makes a run inside but is flagged up immediately.

The Blades' famous flying centre-backs are already on show, pushing forward when they can.

John Fleck wins a corner after his blocked cross on the left. Fabianski punches clear under pressure.

20:01

KICK-OFF

Away we go in Yorkshire.

Sheffield immediately try and build down the left but the ball goes out of play and West Ham take charge of possession.

TEAMS WARMING UP

19:10

West Ham boss David Moyes speaks

I think the players have responded really well in a short period and they have to take the credit because we haven't had much time to talk to them.

I think the team picked tonight lets me play both three and four at the back. I don't want to be tied down to any one way at the moment.

I have got to say when I came in I felt it was from scratch. After beating Bournemouth it made things feel easier, settled down. It's great to start again, we want to keep that momentum going.

19:06

Sheffield owner Abdullah bin Musa'ad speaks

The most important piece in any club is the right coach and the right management.

I think we want to be the better United!

We want to establish ourselves as a Premier League club which with our history I think we deserve to be.

If at the start of the season you'd have said eighth I'd have signed.

If we finish around where we are now we would be happy. every year you want to improve but it is a tough league.
