Latin American cities have undergone significant socio-spatial transformations in recent decades. This highlights the need to analyze and discuss the impact of globalization, neoliberalization, and financialization on living and producing urban space. One of them is the increasing "renting" of the population. Renting is currently the only strategy of access to housing for a large percentage of the population. At the same time, this modality has serious limitations, not only economic, but also typological and geographical, pointing to a growing gap between the supply of produced housing and the demand of households.
This article is an attempt to explain the progress of the process of "renting" the population and the commodification, valorization and financialization of urban production.
The methodological strategy used is an inductive-explanatory approach. It combines quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis based on primary and secondary sources. The aim is to examine the conditions of the tenant population and the production of rental housing in order to generate discussions that contribute to the design of public policies and actions that respond to contemporary housing needs.
