FORMAÇÃO DO ÍNDICE DE MODERNIZAÇÃO DA FRONTEIRA AGRÍCOLA - OESTE DA BAHIA / FORMATION OF THE AGRICULTURAL MODERNIZATION INDEX OF AGRICULTURAL FRONTIER - WESTERN BAHIA

Abstract

The Cerrado occupation in Western Bahia, from the 1970s, and the process of agricultural modernization are responsible for the formation and expansion of the agricultural frontier. This paper aims to construct a agricultural modernization index through a set of variables, from census data, that explain the process of modernization of the agricultural frontier in Western Bahia. The research was based on census data from the 1970-2006 and submitted to factor analysis for the construction of agricultural modernization index. The data showed that in all the years analyzed, the main IMA to the Western Bahia was F1, whose values were shown to be greater than 40% of variables. As the occupation of per space itself is not just at the level of modernization, but the continued use of investment and technological standard, which explains a lack of uniformity in the degree of modernization between the different microrregions, as well as between the cities of each microrregion.
