Abstract

The originality of this article consists in the search for understanding urban informality on the banks of a railway in the metropolitan context of a Brazilian capital. Border communities are defined as those that are confined or on the continuous limits of linear developments such as railways, highways, transmission lines and pipelines. In this sense, the present work aims to address the tensions in which communities that live on the “margins” of this urban equipment and legality, due to regulatory policies - constitute, with the exception of the unplannable and therefore, tensions. To this end, a bibliographical review was carried out analyzing the thinking of researchers who are dedicated to studying methodological and epistemological issues of urban informality. The central objective of this study is to bring light to neighboring communities through theoretical concepts of informality, applied to the multiplicity of factors that affect the daily lives of individuals who live on these banks. The hypothesis is that the regulatory order promoted by state agents are the main constituents of the informality existing in the territory under study.
