65th anniversary of the UERJ Faculty of Nursing

With the firm intention, since its inauguration in June 20, 1948, to become a school of excellence for the training of nurses, the Faculty of Nursing at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) had, in person, Zaira Cintra Vidal, as its first mentor and organizer, a portrait of the determination that characterizes our trajectory. The four years of intense organizational work, before the opening of the first class at the Rachel Haddock Lobo School of Nurses, linked to the General Secretariat of Health and Assistance of the Federal District in 1948, show that the cornerstone was based looking towards to the future, to ensure sustainability and continued growth.

The desire for expansion, spurred by the growth of the country and at the time Federal Capital. This brings, at the end of 1940 and beginning of 50, two major challenges: the match with the standard of the Anna Nery School soon obtained based on the excellent conditions for the organization of the course, and at the time, integration with the then newly created University in the Federal District. Despite the attempts of three previous administrations, it was only in 1961, by the hands of Professor Nalva Pereira de Caldas (now, our Emerita), that the school starts the process then the final integration of the State University of Guanabara, a process completed in 1963.

The decades since have been of intense work and advances for the Faculty. In 17 initiatives that preceded this we can highlight, so very brief, the conquests. The organization planned since the beginning, leadership, participation and linkage with the managements of public health policies, at all levels, in each period. The search for qualification of the teaching staff. Participation in spaces of social struggle and of professional representation. The provision of training courses and qualifications for meeting the nursing demand of Southern Rio de Janeiro. The participation in deliberative spaces and collegiate bodies of the University, in addition to spaces in central management. The restlessness, innovation and courage to accomplish processes of structural change in training visibility in the extension field of practice. Closer relations with care units of UERJ; conquest of space of relevance in the context of national research and scientific production of the nursing area; transparency and disclosure of results and proposals - permanent openness to dialog with the society, the University and the professional category.

It demarcates our participation in the democratization process of the country and the proposition of a national public health policy. Several teachers and students of the Faculty of Nursing were integrated into the discussions and meetings deliberative structures on the directions of health, at the end of the 1970s and during the 80s, in the context of political openness. At the same time, a new horizon for the training of nurses was taking shape, in order to reaffirm the commitment of this Faculty with the health needs of the population, a counterpoint to the voracity of a growing private health market, based on a techno-care model that focuses on determining the biological health-disease process.

In this our journey, we must also bear the increasing complexity of the actions that characterize us as a Faculty, within a public institution, the UERJ. In three dimensions: teaching, research and extension - we are moving in the endless search for their in-dis-sociability.

Thus, it is that, during the 1980s, the need to recast the structure and curriculum development becomes pressing and leads to its establishment. During the 90s an intensive process of curriculum reform, whose bases, pedagogical, political and human remain as the main guiding focus, in perennial tension between the logic that governs a teaching practice and care based on ethical-political and democratic values, as well as the maintenance and constant reinvention of a social order still exclusionary and of individualistic character. Not denying this tension, and yes, from it reinterpret the context of training, while reaffirming the values that sustain it, is the challenge that we face daily in the classroom and fields of practice.

The undergraduate education, our driving force, presents itself as a privileged space for thinking of the profession, as a social practice and work. The current composition of the panorama of training in nursing has progressed much from the point of view of quantitative supply of undergraduate courses. However, persisting in a proposal, such as ours, which does not operate based on mere compliance with the minimum number of hours, but the acquisition of set of technical, human and ethical policies that constitute solid foundation for professional practice today is swimming against the tide of trivialization of lightened education and training that multiply around us. We have worked to ensure that our students will be able to; along their training and professional trajectory, develop the critical capacity to go beyond misleading appearances of work management fads that penetrate the sub-division of the work process. In the fragmentation of the journey in shifts, attracting young people to an ideal of consumption, by accumulation of employment bonds, which, besides consuming the nurse worker's health, also affect the ability of good care.

The incorporation of the Residence Nursing Course in the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital the academic activities of the Faculty of Nursing, from 2011, allows today give the specialist certification to graduates, without prejudice to the certification of in-service training, by the Ministry of Health. With the intention to respond to the needs of attention, based on the epidemiological profile of our population, are added to the courses of specialization of the Faculty, which serve, each year, approximately 400 nurses from across the State.

From the maturity of academic faculty, the Faculty has decided, in 1999, by opening the Academic Master's and, more recently, in 2010, of the Doctoral Course in Nursing. Our academic and scientific production has accelerated in recent years, and gave visibility and recognition for our Graduate Program in Nursing in the context of postgraduate courses in this area in the country and internationally. It beckons in the current context, for the enforcement of international cooperation, which are also contemplating graduate students at Science Without Frontiers program (Sem Fronteiras) as a teachers and students of the post, through exchanges and collaborative research projects.

The extension practice, so expensive and rooted in this Faculty, it is expressed in extension projects, some in constant activity for decades. The creation, in 2011, of our first Extension Program, the PROCRIAR, consolidates the many years of articulation of innovative projects, facing the integral care in health, based on the interdisciplinary principle.

Thanks to the courage, determination and organization of all the management that preceded us, and the social body that composes and recomposes, in each season, we have arrived at this place, which we now occupy. The future scenario is that we cannot foresee - as never before - A path free of obstacles and full of facilities. The issues and questions that we have do not have ready-made answers, and there are many to respond. In the purest traditions of criticism, we affirm, however, that no society without facing issues that it already has, or is in the process of obtaining the conditions for solving them.

Faculty, the word, its origin, meaning either way, power, ability, strength, virtue, property, ability, art. Faculty is power for outside, in the words of the philosopher Claudio Ulpian. The power that has led us, over the course of 65 years, is also the ability to touch the other, get out of ourselves, of looking at reality through many eyes.

That we will be able to identify and formulate the good, the best questions, those that make us power and action for the response, in the pursuit of building many decades more of dedication, social commitment and qualification in training of nurses.
