UERJ Nursing Journal: 22 Years of history

The UERJ Nursing Journal was created in 1993, linked to the Faculty of Nursing at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in order to constitute scientific and cultural dissemination of space within the field of nursing in Rio de Janeiro. This has been complied with in the course of its 22 years of existence, with the dissemination of many contributions from researchers and professionals from all over Brazil. However, this commitment has to be insufficient for the desires of your target audience and also to the demands of national and international realities of dissemination of knowledge in the fields of health and nursing, which began to require a character eminently scientific of their journals.

From this challenge, in 2001, the UERJ Nursing Journal began a process of modernization, aiming to reach international standards of indexing of scientific journals, a project that ended in 2004, with the forwarding of indexing requests nationally and internationally. This process of modernization of the Journal involved a series of transformations that covered the graphical presentation, the standardization criteria, the criteria for acceptance of articles, the publication of four fascicles/year from 2005, the editorial policy, the composition of the Editorial Boards and Ad-Hoc Consultants, and the selection criteria and renewal of the editor's team.

The current editorial policy is characterized by expanding the boundaries of intellectual production conveyed, conceiving the objects and the practice of nursing and health as disciplinary and social. This editorial policy came to meet the contemporary trends of integration and complementarity of knowledge, taking into account the vocation of nursing for the articulation of different knowledge.

From the modernization cited, the Journal began to publish work of researchers, not only the area of nursing, but also to other areas of health care, in addition to other areas with which the nursing establishes dialog during the process of production of knowledge, especially the social areas and human, such as social psychology and sociology.

To achieve this new profile editorial, the Editorial Board has to be integrated by renowned researchers from other areas of knowledge with which the nursing establishes permanent dialog, particularly the humanities. At the current time, the Editorial Board is composed of representatives of different countries, in addition to specialists in the areas of nursing and health, representing all regions of the Country.

As standard procedure, the Editorial Board is renewed in 1/3 of its members every 4 years, consolidating its national and international representativeness. The Ad-Hoc Council of Advisors is permanent, in order to have represented the majority of graduate programs in nursing in Brazil, as well as experts from other areas of knowledge, and recognized researchers from other countries.

With regard to the profile of the published texts, the Journal, it currently attributes the highest priority to the dissemination of original research articles, as a way to give more visibility to the scientificity of health and nursing. The permanent sections are: Research Articles, Review Articles and News.

Depending on the National Agenda for Health Research Priorities, the Journal has been trying to guide the editorial policy in such a way as to give prominence to production toward the resolution of the problems and needs of the Brazilian population, whereas the themes covered in the Agenda.

The availability of the full texts on the Portal of BVS - Nursing began in 2006. It is also available to readers' online access to the full text of articles published from 2004 through link pointed out in place of the Journal Nursing UERJ ( http://www.facenf.uerj.br/revenfermuerj.html ).

The example of other journals in the field of health, the adoption of the standards of the Uniform Requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Vancouver style), approved by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors and published in New Engl Med 1997; 336: 309 – 16.

In the year of 2012, the UERJ Nursing Journal has completed 20 years of continuous publication, marked by timeliness, credibility and quality editorial to publish its 20th annual volume.

This represented the final entrance of UERJ Nursing Journal in the digital era, prioritizing online dissemination. This decision has brought major changes in the relationship with the public reader, with the authors and with the entire editorial staff and their collaborators.

We started with the expanding space for publication, in which the target has been achieved, even in volumes 20 (2012) and 21 (2013), the diffusion of 120 articles per year. Such a measure will certainly contributes greatly to meet the growing demand from, mainly, in the graduate program in nursing.

To prioritize the online manner, we ensure free access to all its contents. This initiative involved the change of fundraising modality. The financing of the Journal has to be done through levying charges for submission and publication of article.

Prioritizing the online system also defined the goal of editing the articles also in English, thus broadening the scope of visibility of our authors in the international scenario.

With respect to the indexing, it is worth mentioning that the Journal Nursing UERJ has met the basic requirements for admission to the Scopus base available in: http://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=19700187810&typ=sid&clean=0), appear today as periodic with impact factor SJR = 0.36 and index H = 5, for the period 2010-2013.

In the same way, the UERJ Nursing Journal has met the basic requirements for admission to the base CUIDEN (available at: http://www.index-f.com/) appear as regular with index BER = 1.4959, in the evaluation of 2012, occupying the fifth position in the ranking of journals of that base.

Thus, the UERJ Nursing Journal reiterates its commitment and responsibility with the community academic/scientific of Brazilian nursing, without sacrificing the quality and timeliness of information.
